About

Hey there!

My name is Arun Narayanan (pronounced "uh-roon nuh-rye-nen") and I'm a filmmaker based in Los Angeles. I received an MFA in Film & TV Production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 2014, and a BA from Brandeis University in 2010 with a double major in Film and Economics. I'm currently represented by Joel Millner at the Larchmont Literary Agency.

Here are some of the scripts I've written:

• THE TIME CAPSULE is a romantic comedy about a straight-laced high school teacher who attempts to win back his former high school sweetheart by re-creating the memories they had together as teenagers, now ten years later. It was written on assignment for Larry Levinson Productions and PixL TV, an offshoot of The Hallmark Channel. It was produced for approximately $1.6 million with Emmy-winning director Bradford May (JAG, Hawaii Five-O) and stars Shane Harper (God's Not Dead), Penelope Mitchell (The Vampire Diaries, Hemlock Grove), Shanica Knowles (Hannah Montana), Chris Kattan (Saturday Night Live), and Reginald VelJohnson (Family MattersDie Hard). It is currently in post-production and slated for a 2017 release.

• THE INVISIBLE BOY (formerly titled "Some Kind of Miracle") is a comedy-drama about a twelve-year-old girl who becomes pregnant in what appears to be a modern-day immaculate conception. It was written on spec and recently optioned by the director Darren Stein (Jawbreaker). The script was an official selection of the 2015 IFP (Independent Filmmaker Project) Emerging Storytellers Program, a Semi-Finalist (Top 10) in the 2016 Seattle International Film Festival's Catalyst Screenplay Competition, and a Finalist (Top 5) in the spring 2015 Acclaim Scripts Feature Screenplay Contest. The film has a projected budget of $1 million and is actively seeking producing partners, financing, and actor attachments.

• THE ADVENTURES OF ASH AND OWEN is a semi-autobiographical half-hour single-camera comedy about two young outcasts, one Indian-American and one African-American, who decide to team up to rise through the social strata of their otherwise entirely white middle school in suburban Connecticut. It was the 1st Place Winner in the 2016 CineStory TV/Digital Fellowship Competition's Original Comedy category, a Finalist (Top 3) in the Showtime Tony Cox Episodic Screenplay Competition at the 2016 Nantucket Film Festival, a Finalist (Top 10) in the 2015 Page International Screenwriting Awards, and a Finalist (Top 10) in the 2015 Final Draft Big Break Contest.

As a writer, I am interested in comedic stories that are grounded in human emotion, but often with a dash of the fantastical (think The Last Man on Earth or Atlanta). In feature films, I also have an interest in science-fiction stories, as long as they are fairly connected to the real world (think The Truman Show or Back to the Future).

About

While screenwriting is my passion, I also have a parallel career as a freelance video editor. I've edited corporate videos for companies including Disney and promotional videos for brands including Sephora, as well as documentaries, short films and music videos. Most notably, I co-edited the independent feature-length thriller THE VAULT, starring James Franco (127 HoursSpider-Man) and Taryn Manning (Orange is the New Black), which was recently acquired by FilmRise and is expected in theaters in 2017.

And finally, I've directed and/or produced a number of successful short films over the past few years, including one called CELLULOID DREAMS, which aired in PBS's "Shorts Showcase" program in 2013 and 2014, and one called FALSE WITNESS, which began airing on the ShortsHD (also known as Shorts International) television network in 2016. Three more short films that I wrote and produced - OVER THE EDGE, STILL ALIVE and PINCH ME - are in the process of being licensed by ShortsHD to be broadcast beginning in mid-2017. Many of these short films are available to view on this site and Vimeo.

Oh, and I occasionally do some acting too. Mostly just background acting these days though. See if you can spot me in this clip from New Girl:

Cheers,
Arun Narayanan
